Some of us are reminded of “the old days” when we watched Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving and the Macy’s Day Parade on Thanksgiving morning. Others remember their own family's holiday traditions After perusing the Marin IJ newspaper from the 1950s-1970’s, most of the Thanksgiving traditions included turkey dinner at home, community events, and quite a few restaurants that offered a holiday dinner: November 22, 1950 - Joe’s Village Patio - Special Complete Thanksgiving Dinner for only $2.50 (Children’s menu $1.25). November 22, 1950 - Le Chateau - Thanksgiving DInner $3.50. November 18, 1966 - Dominic’s Harbor Restaurant - Special Thanksgiving menu. November 16, 1973 - Windjammer Restaurant (5 Main St., Tiburon) - Thanksgiving Dinner $7.50 (Children $3.95). A November 22, 1950 Marin IJ Thanksgiving article highlighted positive things happening throughout Marin: Airmen at Hamilton Field had the day off except those working on essential tasks. Clubs and mess halls will be serving Thanksgiving dinner following the morning church service. Older children of Sunnyhills Farm will be given a special treat of having breakfast in their cottages followed by Thanksgiving dinner in the dining hall. The nursery children have been invited to the homes of staff people. There was a special evening program and extra treat at night. Boys at St. Vincent school who didn’t go home were guests at a dinner and a show. Inmates at San Quentin enjoyed a full Thanksgiving dinner along with watching a boxing and wrestling show in the afternoon. “On this Thanksgiving, let us be thankful that we still have brave men fighting(and dying) for our way of life in Korea…let us hope that next Thanksgiving will be less grim, that our young men will have returned from Korea and resumed their peaceful pursuits among us.” No matter what year it is and what is going on in the world, country or community, Marin residents have always helped with vital causes and persevered. Happy Thanksgiving! |
